In the 1950s, the Savannah River Plant was constructed nearby. This nuclear materials processing plant was constructed for refining tthe materials to deploy in nuclear weapons. This was the beginning of Augusta's development as a main urban industrial center in the south. AAugusta moved into the second half of the twentieth century on the threshold of becoming an urban industrial center in the South. The Savannah River Plant to this day employs over 13,000 people, who's object now is to clean up radioactive material.
The U.S. Army Signal Center at Fort Gordon is the largest communications training center on the planet. A large industrial base provides employment in the production of medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles, and golf carts. More than 25,000 people are employed in health care./p>
